This privacy policy explains how LinuxCapable (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects information when you visit linuxcapable.com (the “Site”). It also describes the rights you have under applicable privacy laws and how you can exercise them.
LinuxCapable is operated from Western Australia. We publish free technical guides and fund hosting through advertising served by Nitro (Nitropay), an Overwolf Ltd company. Because Nitro shares data with advertising partners for personalized advertising, parts of this policy describe processing we do not carry out ourselves but which occurs on the Site through Nitro’s advertising platform.

Information We Collect
When you visit the Site, we and our service providers automatically collect limited technical information about your device and visit. We refer to this as “Device Information.”
Device Information includes your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, device type, approximate location derived from your IP, referring and exit pages, pages viewed, time zone, and interaction data such as clicks and session duration.
Device Information is collected through the following technologies:
- Cookies: small data files stored on your device, sometimes including an anonymous unique identifier. For a general overview of cookies and how to disable them, see https://www.allaboutcookies.org.
- Log files: server logs that record IP address, browser type, internet service provider, referring and exit pages, and date/time stamps.
- Web beacons, tags, and pixels: small electronic files used by us and our advertising partners to record browsing activity and measure advertising performance.
We also collect information you voluntarily provide. This includes the name, email address, and comment content you submit when leaving a comment, and any information you send through the contact form or by email.
The Site uses Google Analytics 4 for aggregated visitor analytics. Google Analytics places cookies and receives information such as pages visited, time spent on each page, device and browser details, and approximate location.
Google Analytics may use IP address to derive coarse location data; Google states that, for EU, UK, and Swiss users, IP-address data is discarded before logging and is not accessible or used for additional purposes. You can learn how Google processes this data at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and you can opt out of Google Analytics in all browsers by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above to operate and improve the Site, analyze traffic patterns, respond to comments and contact-form messages, prevent fraud and abuse, comply with legal obligations, and serve advertising that funds hosting.
Our legal bases under the EU and UK GDPR are consent for non-essential cookies and personalized advertising, legitimate interests for security, analytics, and general site operation, and compliance with legal obligations.
Advertising, Sharing, and the Consent Management Platform
Advertising on LinuxCapable is delivered by Nitro (Nitropay), operated by Overwolf Ltd. Nitro is a registered participant in the IAB Europe Transparency and Consent Framework (CMP ID 242).
When you first visit the Site, a consent banner managed by Nitro asks whether you agree to the use of non-essential cookies and related tracking technologies for personalized advertising and measurement. Your choice is stored in a TCF consent string and honored by Nitro and its downstream partners.
We do not “sell” personal information in the ordinary sense, meaning we do not exchange it for money. However, under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, and under similar laws in other U.S. states, the delivery of personalized advertising through Nitro and its partners qualifies as “sharing” personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Information that may be shared includes online identifiers, IP address, approximate location, browsing data on this Site, and advertising cookie IDs.
Nitro discloses its current advertising partner categories and named partners in its own policy at https://nitropay.com/privacy/. The specific ad-tech partner list may change over time, so Nitro’s policy is the authoritative source for current advertising recipients, Unified ID providers, exchanges, measurement providers, and related partners.
Your Choices About Advertising
You can control personalized advertising on LinuxCapable in the following ways:
- Use the “Manage Consent” or “Privacy” link in the Nitro consent banner (usually shown on first visit and available from a persistent corner control) to withdraw or change your consent at any time.
- Enable the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal in a supporting browser or extension. We and Nitro treat a valid GPC signal as an opt-out of “sale” and “sharing” where applicable law recognizes GPC as an opt-out mechanism.
- Opt out of interest-based advertising through self-regulatory programs: Digital Advertising Alliance (US), DAA Canada, European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance, and the Network Advertising Initiative.
- Adjust or opt out of Google personalized advertising at Google Ad Settings.
How We Share Information With Service Providers and Partners
For ordinary site operation, we share personal information with service providers that help us run the Site. These currently include our hosting provider, Google Analytics, Nitro (advertising), and the comment and anti-spam systems that power our comment sections.
Advertising-related sharing through Nitro and downstream advertising partners is described above and depends on consent choices, Global Privacy Control signals, and other opt-out rights where applicable.
We may also disclose personal information when required to comply with applicable law, a lawful request from a public authority, to enforce our Terms and Conditions, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of LinuxCapable, our users, or the public.
Comments
When you leave a comment, the name you submit and the comment content are displayed publicly. Your email address is stored with the comment for moderation and reply purposes and is not published.
Comments may be retained for as long as the underlying article is live on the Site so that discussion threads remain useful to other readers. You can request deletion of your comments at any time through the contact page, and we will honor the request unless we are required to retain the comment for a legal purpose.
International Data Transfers
LinuxCapable operates from Australia. Our hosting provider, advertising partner (Nitro, based in Israel and operating globally), and analytics provider (Google) process data in multiple jurisdictions including the United States, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Israel.
When personal information is transferred outside your jurisdiction, we rely on the transfer mechanisms of our service providers, including Standard Contractual Clauses, adequacy decisions, and the country-level safeguards documented in their respective privacy policies.
Data Retention
We retain personal information only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy or as required by law. Analytics data collected through Google Analytics is automatically deleted according to Google’s retention settings. Comment data is retained for the life of the associated article unless you request earlier deletion. Contact-form messages are kept for up to 24 months after the last correspondence, then deleted.
Security
We apply reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information against loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, including TLS encryption in transit, access controls, and regular software updates. No method of transmission over the internet is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Data Breach Notification
If a data breach affecting your personal information occurs and is likely to result in serious harm, we will notify affected individuals and relevant authorities as required under the Australian Notifiable Data Breaches scheme (Privacy Act 1988, Part IIIC), the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (Articles 33 and 34), and any other applicable law.
Your Rights
European Economic Area, United Kingdom, and Switzerland
If you are located in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland, you have the right under the GDPR and UK GDPR to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal information, and to request data portability. You can also withdraw consent at any time for processing based on consent, and you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.
United States State Privacy Rights
If you are a resident of a U.S. state with an applicable comprehensive privacy law, you may have rights to know what personal information is collected, access or obtain a copy of it, correct inaccuracies, request deletion, and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information, targeted advertising, or certain profiling, depending on your state.
We treat a valid GPC signal as an opt-out of sale and sharing where applicable law recognizes it. California residents may also have the right to limit the use of sensitive personal information, though LinuxCapable does not knowingly process sensitive personal information as defined by the CPRA.
Australia
If you are located in Australia, you have rights under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles, including access to and correction of your personal information. You can also make a complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au if you believe we have mishandled your personal information.
How to Exercise Your Rights
To exercise any of these rights, use the LinuxCapable contact page or email contact@linuxcapable.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request. We will respond within the timeframe required by applicable law. You have the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
Children’s Privacy
LinuxCapable is intended for a general adult audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 (or under 16 in jurisdictions where that higher threshold applies). If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will delete the information.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
There is no industry-wide standard for responding to the Do Not Track browser signal, and we do not currently respond to it. We do honor Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals as an opt-out of “sale” and “sharing” where applicable law recognizes GPC as a valid opt-out mechanism.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be reflected on this page, and where required by law we will notify you or request renewed consent. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
